| The main objectives of drinking water treatment are to produce high quality water that is safe for human consumption, has aesthetic appeal, conforms to standards, and is economical in production. One of the tools that help to achieve these goals is activated carbon. Activated carbon is useful in drinking water treatment because it acts as an adsorbent, and can effectively remove particles and organics from water. These organics are of great concern in water treatment because they react with many disinfectants, especially chlorine, and cause the formation of disinfection-by-products, DBP's .These DBP's are often carcinogenic and therefore highly undesirable. Activated carbon is one of the best tools which can be used to reduce risks to human health and provide an aesthetically pleasing product at reasonable cost. Adsorption is the process by which Activated Carbon removes substances from water. It is a removal process where certain particles are bound to an adsorbent particle surface by either chemical or physical attraction. The water industry uses activated carbon in several forms, typically powdered and granular, to deal with a variety of undesirable aspects in raw water. |
|
|
Granular activated carbon has a relatively larger particle size compared to powdered activated carbon and consequently, presents a smaller external surface. Diffusion of the adsorbate is thus an important factor. These carbons are therefore preferred for all adsorption of gases and vapors as their rate of diffusion are faster. Granulated carbons are used for water treatment, deodorization and separation of components of flow system. The most popular aqueous phase carbons are the 12×40 and 8×30 sizes because they have a good balance of size, surface area, and loss characteristics. In gas phase adsorption, granular carbon is almost always used because the pressure drop in the carbon bed is of prime importance and only granular carbon will allow sufficient flow with an acceptable pressure drop.

· Activated carbons (powdered) are derived from either hard wood charcoal or pine wood charcoal. Naturally therefore these carbons are vegetable origin. In the activation process the super heated steam reacts with wood charcoal (water gas reaction) and opens up fresh spaces in an already porous charcoal. new pores are created allowing access to the molecules to be absorbed on the surface of the charcoal. · Purification of higher fatty acid · Food industries (glucose, fructose etc.) · Soft drink and effluent treatment · Dye and dye intermediates · Purification of acidic and basic electroplating bath · Purification of edible and inedible oils.

Ion exchange resins are polymers that are capable of exchanging particular ions within the polymer with ions in a solution that is passed through them. In water purification the aim is usually either to soften the water or to remove the mineral content altogether. Ion exchange resins are classified as cation exchangers, which have positively charged mobile ions available for exchange, and anion exchangers, whose exchangeable ions are negatively charged. Both anion and cation resins are produced from the same basic organic polymers. They differ in the ionizable group attached to the hydrocarbon network. It is this functional group that determines the chemical behavior of the resin. Resins can be broadly classified as strong or weak acid cation exchangers or strong or weak base anion exchangers. In an ion exchange process, cations or anions in a liquid solution (usually aqueous) replace dissimilar and displaceable ions of the same charge contained in the ion exchange resin.

| RO Antiscalant Range of RO Membrane Antiscalants Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane performance can be negatively impacted by impurities that build up on the membrane surface during operations. Suspended solids, microorganisms and mineral scale can foul membrane elements. These deposits can cause loss in output and/or rejection levels and reduce total system performance. Antiscalants are surface active materials that interfere with precipitation reactions in three primary ways: Threshold Inhibition: It is the ability of an antiscalant to keep supersaturated solutions of sparingly soluble salts.Crystal Modification: It is the property of an antiscalant to distort crystal shapes, resulting in soft non adherent scale. As a crystal begin to form at the submicroscopic level, negative groups located on the antiscalant molecule attack the positive charges on scale nuclei interrupting the electronic balance necessary to propagate the crystal growth. When treated with crystal modifiers, scale crystals appear distorted, generally more oval in shape, and less compact.Dispersion: Dispersancy is the ability of some antiscalants to adsorb on crystals or colloidal particles and impart a high anionic charge, which tends to keep the crystals separated. The high anionic charge also separates particles from fixed anionic charges present on the membrane surface. The Puron™ pretreatment program is designed to eliminate scale and reduce fouling in membrane systems, regardless of the feed water source. The puron™ range of products are ready to use formulation forpotable applications and puron range is an economical dry formulation for on-site preparation. | Ro antiscalant balls Antiscalant Balls are pretreatment products formulated to prevent, rather than remove, scaling and inorganic fouling. A preventative system maintenance program with the antiscalant balls reduces membrane cleaning requirements while enhancing your ro system performance. What can Puron™ Antiscalant balls do for you Most natural waters cause damages in ro membranes, pipes, boilers and other installations. Some contain dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium salts. Such waters are referred to as hard water. Hard waters form scale in membranes, pipes and boilers. This leads to a decrease in water pressure and an increased energy demand. Clogged pipes may have to be replaced. Heating coils may overheat and fail. Hard waters are aggressive to metals and cause corrosion. Consequently the tap water turns brown. Leaks and burst pipes may be the results. Puron™ Antiscalant Balls Protect water systems in hotels, public buildings, private households and industry against scale formation and corrosion.Prevent so-called ‘brown’ or ‘red’ water and clogged pipesSave expensive repairs or even replacement of water pipes, boilers, heaters, cooling systems etc.Help to save energyExtend the life of your water installation. Puron™ Antiscalant Balls prevent scale and stops corrosion. It utilizes the phenomenon that minute concentrations of polyphosphates are sufficient to inhibit the deposition of scale onto metallic surfaces. Because of their phosphate and silicate content, puronantiscalant balls also inhibits corrosion by forming a thin protective layer on the metal surface. A concentration of 2-3 ppm is sufficient to achieve both of these effects. Puron™ Antiscalant Balls will also slowly remove existing scale in old pipes if it consists of brown scale, i.e. Ironoxide. Hard scale, i.e. Calcium carbonate cannot so easily be removed by puronantiscalant balls. Here the advantage is again that puronantiscalant balls will prevent further scaling up. Experience shows that scale and corrosion is not only found in galvanized but also in copper pipes. Even in plastic pipes one can find scale and deposits. As a rule of thumb one can say that 1 mm scale on the heating coils of a boiler, increases the energy cost by 15%. Puronantiscalant balls consists of 100% active substance. The use in tap water and other types of fresh water at the prescribed dosage is inoffensive. Puron™ Antiscalant Balls dispensers can be installed in almost every water system. They require no electric installation and hardly any maintenance. They only have to be refilled with spheres every 3 - 6 months. Refilling is very easy. Puron™ Antiscalant Balls protect membrane of domestic ro systems and ensures long life of membranes. |
