RO membrane cleaning is an important part of any reverse osmosis maintenance program. Effective cleaning usually requires some knowledge of the type of foulant and the cleaning options available. Foulants on the membrane surface can cause flux loss (permeate flow), an increase in differential pressure, higher product water conductivity, a need for increased feed pressure to maintain output or a combination of these effects. 
Purokleen™ is a proprietary blend of mono-polymers and cleaning compounds. The cleaning compounds attack the organic and inorganic fouling. The polymers protect the membrane surface from damage which can be caused by the harmful cleaning chemicals.

Usage Tips :

When adjusting the PH of cleaning solutions or plant feed water always refer to membrane manufacturer's or oem's instructions.Purokleen™ cleaners are used in dilution with potable water that is free of residual chlorine or other oxidizing agents to make the cleaning solution. The cleaning solution must be stirred to avoid localized variations in PH. The cleaning solution is prepared by addition of recommended dosage of product. After adjusting the PH of solution as desired, the cleaning solution is then circulated throughout the system without exceeding pressures, temperatures and flow rates recommended by the membrane manufacturer. Cleaning efficacy can be further improved by heating the cleaning solution and alternately circulating the solution for 15 minutes and then soaking the membranes for 15 minutes. This should be repeated as many times as necessary. Dosage depends on severity of fouling.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane performance can be negatively impacted by impurities that build up on the membrane surface during operations. Suspended solids, microorganisms and mineral scale can foul membrane elements. These deposits can cause loss in output and/or rejection levels and reduce total system performance. 

Antiscalants are surface active materials that interfere with precipitation reactions in three primary ways:

Threshold Inhibition: It is the ability of an antiscalant to keep supersaturated solutions of sparingly soluble salts.

Crystal Modification: It is the property of an antiscalant to distort crystal shapes, resulting in soft non adherent scale. As a crystal begin to form at the submicroscopic level, negative groups located on the antiscalant molecule attack the positive charges on scale nuclei interrupting the electronic balance necessary to propagate the crystal growth. When treated with crystal modifiers, scale crystals appear distorted, generally more oval in shape, and less compact.

Dispersion: Dispersancy is the ability of some antiscalants to adsorb on crystals or colloidal particles and impart a high anionic charge, which tends to keep the crystals separated. The high anionic charge also separates particles from fixed anionic charges present on the membrane surface.

Antiscalant Balls are pretreatment products formulated to prevent, rather than remove, scaling and inorganic fouling. A preventative system maintenance program with the antiscalant balls reduces membrane cleaning requirements while enhancing your ro system performance. 


What can PURON™ Antiscalant balls do for you

Most natural waters cause damages in ro membranes, pipes, boilers and other installations. Some contain dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium salts. Such waters are referred to as hard water. 

Hard waters form scale in membranes, pipes and boilers. This leads to a decrease in water pressure and an increased energy demand. Clogged pipes may have to be replaced. Heating coils may overheat and fail. 

Hard waters are aggressive to metals and cause corrosion. Consequently the tap water turns brown. Leaks and burst pipes may be the results.

PURON™ Antiscalant Balls prevent scale and stops corrosion. It utilizes the phenomenon that minute concentrations of polyphosphates are sufficient to inhibit the deposition of scale onto metallic surfaces. Because of their phosphate and silicate content, PURON antiscalant balls also inhibits corrosion by forming a thin protective layer on the metal surface. A concentration of 2-3 ppm is sufficient to achieve both of these effects. 


PURON™ Antiscalant Balls  will also slowly remove existing scale in old pipes if it consists of brown scale, i.e. Ironoxide. Hard scale, i.e. Calcium carbonate cannot so easily be removed by PURON antiscalant balls. Here the advantage is again that PURON antiscalant balls will prevent further scaling up. Experience shows that scale and corrosion is not only found in galvanized but also in copper pipes. Even in plastic pipes one can find scale and deposits. 

As a rule of thumb one can say that 1 mm scale on the heating coils of a boiler, increases the energy cost by 15%. PURON antiscalant balls consists of 100% active substance. The use in tap water and other types of fresh water at the prescribed dosage is inoffensive. 


PURON™ Antiscalant Balls dispensers can be installed in almost every water system. They require no electric installation and hardly any maintenance. They only have to be refilled with spheres every 3 - 6 months. Refilling is very easy.
